To Kill a Mockingbird

The law suggest that Atticus should be a bit flexible, how flexible should he be and why?

In the story To Kill a Mockingbird I didn't understand why Atticus should be flexible.

I don't think this is directed towards Atticus rather than the outcome of the Tom Robinson trial. The jury's verdict was an obvious travesty of Justice. After the Trial Atticus feels that, given the overwhelming evidence, Tom had a good chance of winning on appeal.
