No Scout did not have that quite right. Mr. Dolphus just marched to his own tune. He was a counterculture rebel because he despised Southern white bigotry. He preferred the company of Negros instead of whites. The White community invented stories about him to discredit him. Mr. Raymond in turn satisfied their accusations by drinking Coke out of a paper bag. In many ways Dolphus Raymond was ahead of his time in black/white relations.
