The children become the object of town gossip and "back of the hand" comments because their father is defending Tom Robinson.  They are forbidden by their Aunt to go back to Calpurnia's church even though they would like to return.  Aunt Alexandra actually tries to get Atticus to fire Calpurnia, but he will not given in to her biases.
