Kill Of The MockingBird: what had happened to the Atticus' first two clients?

The Haverfords were hanged. Atticus wanted them to plead guilty to second-degree murder but they were too stubborn. Atticus had studied law but Scout believes that he soon developed a distaste for the criminal rather than the civil side of law.
