Tom is not a racist. He is a kind man, who does his best for his family and assists those around him, black or white. He is not immune to racism because his life is ruined by those who use race as a tool toward a desired end. He is the object of racism, not a participant, and in the end, he takes his own life out of fear of further racial retaliation in jail.
