Aunt Alexandra invites Scout to attend her Missionary Society meeting. Scout helps Calpurnia serve tea and refreshments. The women lament the plight of the poor Mrunas in Africa. A missionary man they admire is trying to bring them to God. While the women feel sorry for the Mrunas, they also mistreat and complain about black African Americans who they live with everyday. They also criticize Atticus for defending Tom Robinson while they enjoy his hospitality by eating his food.
