Killing a mockingbird = hurting/insulting someone who is harmless.

Exactly what the first person said. I read this in Cliffs Notes:

Scout's analysis of Mayella being like a cat isn't just there for no reason. Tom is a mockingbird, and Mayella is the cat that attacks.

The mocking bird is someone who is a good doing gentle person that does not harm. The title to kill a mocking bird is about society crushing those who are good.
