How does Scout single-handedly break up that mob at the jail

She walks up to Mr. Cinningham and immediately makes her questions and conversation personal...... she talks about his son Walter. Often, people are sucked into a mob mentality. Scout's realization that she needed to make him remember who he was as an individual was enough to break up the group. It is one of my favorite scenes.
