The difference in their ages, as well as the fact they are different genders, begins to change the relationship between Scout and Jem. Jem is growing up.... Scout merely wants to play; Jem is thinking things out and analyzing them, whereas, Scout is still impetuous. When the children are confronted with Atticus' well hidden sharpshooting skills, their reaction couldn't be more different. Jem chooses to understand his father's humbleness.... he sees his dad as the epitome of a gentleman and is extremely proud of him. Scout, however, is so excited that she's ready to brag to the world.... something her father wouldn't want, and something her brother has come to understand.
