How do most of the people react to this verdict? Why?

I think everybody was subdued. The town seemed to be quiet in the days that followed knowing the jury had indicted an innocent man. The black community honored Atticus by standing in court for him as well as sending food, they could not really afford, to Atticus's doorstep.
