From the beginning, Scout tells us that Jem will break his arm. What purpose does it serve for Harper Lee to have her narrator give that information away so early?

Jem's arm breaking sets the rest of the story. Scout goes on to relate the whole story of the events that led up to his injury. It provides the starting point for Scout to relate her memories.
