I'm not sure exactly what you're taling about. If the question you're referring to relates to the quote (simile), it is being employed to describe the atmosphere in the town of Maycomb. From the quote we come to understand how the summer's events have affected to residents of Maycomb. Smoke in a dark room would be stiffling and oppressive, as were the effects of the trial preparations and actions of Maycomb's community.
