To Kill a Mockingbird

“Atticus used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts Atticus had no case.” Explain this quote. Why does Mr. Underwood compare Tom Robinson to the killing of songbirds?

How does this idea relate to the title of the book?

Tom was a songbird.... he'd never hurt a soul. Unfortunately, men's hearts were already set based on the bias they'd been exposed to all of their lives. Tom's death was senseless..... and unwarranted.
