Aunt Alexandra has ladies over for a meeting of the Missionary Society of Maycomb, and keeps Scout in attendance in order for her to learn to be a lady. The ladies are concerned about blacks in Africa but scorn the blacks in their own community in need.

Atticus enters the room and informs the Cal.Mis. Maudie and Aunt Alexandra. that Tom was shot trying to escape. Aunt Alexandra shoes genuine concern for Atticus and disappointment over the trial. Scout is proud of her.

Calpurnia and Atticus go to tell Tom's wife the news. Her husband is dead.
