how did atticus finch prove that the ewells story isn't true

in spite of atticus proof of toms innocence why did the jury find tom guilty

He proves that Tom could not have hurt Mayella because of his useless arm and the way he would have been unable to hit her.

The jury is very bigoted and racist. They would choose him guilty even though the Ewells are obviously lying.
