How did John Robie escape from prison?

Robie was in jail during the French Resistance when a shell exploded on the prison and the wall that held him in broke open. He was free and decided to fight with the French rather than flee and was given a pardon for doing so once the fighting was over.

Why is Robie the prime suspect in the jewel robberies?

Before the French Resistance, Robie was one of the most notorious jewel thieves and he was known as "The Cat." The newest robberies all appear to have been done in the same manner as The Cat, thus Robie is considered the prime suspect as an imposter has stolen his trademarks and caused the police and the whole French Riviera to believe he is back to his old ways.

Why does Hitchcock begin the flower market scene with a close up of flowers before pulling out?

Hitchcock does this because Robie is looking for a needle in a haystack by trying to find the real thief. Thus, by beginning the scene on a close-up of the flowers and then pulling out it shows the same idea, that there is one thing Robie is looking for among many many variants.
