What mistakes did the man make?

The man's biggest mistake was not to listen to the old man. He also falls through the snow, builds a fire underneath a spruce tree, exposes his appendages and suffers from frostbite, burns himself while lighting all the matches he has, attempts to kill the dog, and eventually..... he succumbs to hypothermia.
