The man is stubborn and full of hubris. He remembers the old man from Sulpher Creek and his warnings about travelling in the cold. The man considers surviving in the cold a challenge to the old man's advice. He thinks that he can beat nature and prove the old man wrong. He wants to show that he is tougher and smarter than the old man considered.
