The snow put out the fire because the man had lit the fire directly under a tree. The wind blew and shook the snow off the tree. The heat from the fire also melted the snow. The guy was near death before he got the fire going. He was literally a human Popsicle. When the fire went out I pretty much knew that he was done for! He attempted a second fire but his fingers were too frozen to light a match.
