By the end, does the man still lack imagination?

A quote from just after the fire is put out;

"The man was shocked. It was as though he had just heard his own sentence of death."

As you can see, he no longer lacks imagination.

I don't really think he gets the power of nature thing. He tries to make his dog into a sleeping bag but id doesn't work.
