Thomas Hardy: Poems

Based on your reading of “Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?” which of the following generalizations might you make about Hardy’s attitudes?

Only a dog’s love is pure and lasting; human love is fickle.
When a loved one dies, life eventually goes on.
It’s best not to try to love again.
After a loved one dies, the survivor often learns that he or she was not true anyway.

The first one seems the most reasonable. It is the dog who is still there at the end. The lover has moved on and feels that the dead person will not be upset about the lover having moved on.
