why was okonkwo heroic?

Okonkwo was heroic because like the classic heroes he tried to live the values of the culture he was a part of. His desire to emulate those values, even when they went against the feelings that he had, showed a certain loyalty that many of his tribesmen did not show when the Christians began to "colonize" them.
