Okonkwo was pretty secure in his skin before the arival of the white man . He was a powerful man in the village. He also had wealth and many wives. Okonkwo's character flaws were largely overlooked by others. The white man upset Okonkwo's balance of masculinity and power. People who felt estranged from Okonkwo's narrow deffinition of acceptibility, like his son Nwoye, found refuge in the white man and his church. In time, Okonkwo felt impotent and emasculated by the power and influence of the white man.
