A woman's role was to take care of her family and do honor to her husband. First wives garnered more respect because of their status, and the wives who followed deferred to first wives in all things. Mothers were viewed as "supreme" and always consulted with during difficult times. Refuge was found in the mother's homeland.... not the paternal world. None-the-less, they took on other roles as well. Women were charged with painting the houses of the egwugwu.
