Basically, chapter 16 is when the white missionaries come. THey change the very fabric of Igbo society. Whatever Okonkwo loves or identifies himself by quickly erodes. European beliefs and culture is there to stay, the missionaries are backed by the might of imperialism. Really there are too many consequences to list. Many weaker Igbo, like Okonkwo's son Nwoye, find refuge with the missionaries. Any sense of Igbo dominance or independence is shattered. After chapter 16 we see the decline of the Igbo culture.
