Ikemefuna is a young boy given to Umuofia by a neighboring village as tribute. Ikemefuna is sacrificed to prevent a war. He lives in Umuofia for three years, under Okonkwo's roof; Okonkwo looks at him as a son, and to Nwoye he becomes best friend and brother. He is killed by the tribe; out of fear that otherwise people will think him weak, Okonkwo participates in the boy's death.

Ikemefuna's death in Chinua Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart" is tragic because it embodies the collision of cultures and the profound loss of innocence. He is a young boy who is taken hostage by the Igbo clan to settle a dispute. Over time, he becomes integrated into the clan, forming bonds with the people, especially Okonkwo's family. However, his tragic fate is sealed when the Oracle demands his death, a decision that illustrates the Igbo's adherence to their traditional beliefs. His death, orchestrated by the clan, is heart-wrenching as it highlights the cruelty and inhumanity brought about by the clash between traditional customs and the encroachment of colonialism, leaving a lasting impact on the reader's understanding of the novel's themes.
