why does she use the word "pacify"?

Explain the impact of Janies words when she states, "and now you got tuh die to find out dat you got tuh pacify somebody besides yo'self if you wants any love and sympathy in did world. you aint tried pacify nobody but yo'self" (Hurston)

She is stating the idea that you have to think about someone else's needs besides your own. It almost feels as if she is not using pacify in the meaning most people are used to; it seems that she really means satisfy or that she is trying to say "pacify" if you mean to "keep the peace with." (pac = peaceful like Pacific Ocean) The real impact is that she learns not to worry about oneself as much as one worries about someone else.
