What is the significance of this line to the changing relationship of the narrator and her husband? "Lay there for hours trying to decide whether that front pattern and the back pattern really did move together or seperately" (Gilman 1664)

The patterns could represent the narrator and the husband. The patterns do not seem to complement each other: one is overpowering the other just like the husband overpowers the narrator in the marriage.
