The Yellow Wallpaper

Do you think the narrative was mentally ill to begin with or did something else cause her to become mentally ill?

The narrator is depressed. Her physician husband thinks that she needs a vacation of rest. It is hinted that the woman recently gave birth to a child; her sickness might now be called postpartum depression. The woman certainly did not go into the room as "crazy". Being effectively jailed in the small room with hideous wallpaper was the main contributor to her mental instability.
