The narrator is basically put in solitary confinement. The room with the yellow wallpaper is like a prison for the narrator. Her "rest-cure" is really a torture. The narrator is left alone with her own thoughts which spiral out of control. The narrator defines herself through her husband. Her husband is condescending to women and emotionally abusive. The narrator loses sight of herself and begins to identify with the woman that she thinks she sees in the wallpaper.
