Although the setting of the house seems peaceful enough, the room the narrator is locked in really sets the mood and tone of the story: much of the mood bringing a sense of nervousness and madness. The wallpaper itself is hideous and unsettling. This sense of discomfort grows within the narrator throughout the narrative until she has a mental breakdown.
