The narrator suffers from postpartum depression in the beginning of the story. Separating her from her baby and locking her in a room with ugly wallpaper exasperates the problem into a postpartum psychosis. The mood eerily shifts as the woman is shut alone with her thoughts and the wallpaper. The narrator’s anxieties about her identity, her husband, and her marriage quickly change into a paranoid driven panic by the end of the story.
