How is the conflict between John and the narrator further developed?

The narrator seems to resent the fact that John "does not know how much I really suffer." She refers to John with a bit of sarcasm, for example: "I suppose John was never nervous in his life." He thwarts her real desire to have visitors as well as her desire to write; he thwarts her desire to change the wallpaper; he thwarts her second attempt to get a room downstairs--all in the name of her health and not stimulating her too much or letting her think too much or indulge her imagination.
