The author uses time to illustrate the way the past intrudes upon the present, creating a continuous line. The way in which the novel is structured, a story-within-a-story, introduces the connection between the past and the present. The isolated house is shown to be haunted as a result of past decisions, as evidenced through Mrs. Drablow’s collection of documents.
