When Kit was arrested, why didn't William come visit her?

This part of the story is on Chapter 19 but I dont exactly know. This is when Kit got arested because people thought that she was bewitched or a witch.

That evening, for the first time since Kit's arrest, William came to call. He had stayed away, he explained, out of consideration for the illness in the house.
