The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle Quotes

Quotes

“I know the publisher of a story magazine for girls. They’re looking for somebody to pick and revise poems submitted by readers. And they want the person to write a short poem every month for the frontispiece. Pay’s not bad for an easy job. Of course, it’s part-time. But they might add some editorial work if the person-”

Kumiko

Kumiko is a comical character and the wife of Toru, the main character. She challenges her husband to pick up a job editing poems that have been published in a girl's magazine. The husband quickly responds, telling her it is very easy to do editing and he is ready for the task. However, Toru reminds Komiko that he is interested in law, not poetry.

“Or would you prefer me with something on? Something lacy. Or stockings. Would that work better for you?”

Komiko

The narrator is an intriguing character who wants readers to know that his wife is juicy, especially for bedroom matters. For instance, while in bed, Komiko is quick to inquire what her husband prefers to put on so that she can look sexy and captivating before the main bedroom business begins. Shockingly, when the wife asks him what to wear, Toru tells her that he doesn’t care and she can be naked if she so wishes.

“I’ve got a relative with six fingers on each hand. She’s just a little older than me. Next to her pinkie, she's got this extra finger, like a baby's finger. She knows how to fold it up, so most people don’t notice. She’s really pretty.”

Toru (Narrator)

The narrator accounts for his weird female relative, who is extraordinarily created with six fingers. However, the sixth finger is so small, and people cannot notice it because she knows how to hide it tactically. However, the narrator's description of his relative is absurd because he has ill intentions of painting her as less human.
