The Wave encourages group thinking or a type of "mob mentality". Although the students become more efficient, they cease to think for themselves. They accept Mr. Ross's rules and directions at face value.

"But still, people have to do things in their own way. You talk about the greatness of this country and you're talking about people who weren't afraid to act as individuals."
