To avoid hurting Robert’s feelings, Mr. Ross agrees that the student can be his bodyguard. In doing this, Mr. Ross is validating the hysteria that is going on in the school. He is also plunging Robert deeper into something that must end at some point. Robert will lose all sense of identity when the wave ends.
