How did Mr. Robert save Toddy?

Mr. Robert tells the boys that he jumped in the water, dragged Toddy back to shore, turned him upside down to get the water out, gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation, and kicked him a few times. After all that, Toddy pulled through.
