Lila drew a rangoli on the veranda floor with colored chalk and hung a huge red lantern from the beams. She polished the cooking pots until they gleamed and made "festive sweets" for her return. Bella and Kamal made their mother garlands for around her neck, she laughed with joy when she arrived.
