Delaney loves nature and his hikes. This all changes when begins to crumble as soon as he hits Cándido with his car. Delaney recognizes one of the voices as that of Jack Jardine, Jr., and he and his friend are having a filthy and highly racist conversation about Mexican girls. This depresses him and makes him wish that he had stayed back in New York.
