The Tortilla Curtain

My question is that in the Tortilla curtain, part 2, chapters 1-2, asks what is the reference to loaves and fishes?

"what do you expect," he'd said, "when all you bleeding hearts want to invite the whole world in here to feed at our trough without a thought as to who's going to pay for it, as if the American taxpayer was like Jesus Christ with his loaves and fishes?

This is a Biblical allusion. The author refers to Jesus' miracle, recorded in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, which alludes to the expectation that American taxpayers are responsible for creating the same type of service for immigrants.
