Why does the story switch to first person?

For the most part, this story is written in first person, from Tim's perspective. Sometimes the author switches perspective using a peripheral character to get a different take on an event. In the chapter "In the Field" the author slips into an omniscient p.o.v to provide some needed distance between the protagonist and the reader.
