Why did Mark Fossie let MarieAnne go?

Fossie really felt he had no choice. When Mary Anne came to Vietnam she embraced the war effort and took part in raids. Their relationship ended when Fossie saw her wearing a necklace of human tongues he was appalled. In his eyes, she'd crossed some kind of line and was no longer the woman he wished to marry.
