The Things They Carried

the things they carried

4. One stylistic technique O’Brien uses is intentional repetition—of phrases (“they carried”); people’s names and identifying details and pieces of equipment. What effect do you think O’Brien hopes to achieve through such repetition? Is he successful?

O'Brien is a master at creating atmosphere. His repetitions train the reader in the very repetitious duties of a soldier and what he sees and experiences on a daily basis. This also gives the reader a sense of intimacy with the soldiers and their moments in the hell that was Vietnam.

Yes, I think it is very successful. The vernacular of the soldier becomes our vernacular and this puts us, as much as he can, into the vivid experiences of these men.
