O'Brien is lost in his reverie of guilt and self-loathing. His two friends try to console him. "Stop staring at him", says Kiowa. His friend shakes O’Brien out of his reverie. O’Brien notices small blue flowers near the dead man’s head and a white butterfly fluttering near his mouth. “Talk to me Tim,” says Kiowa (125). But O’Brien remains silent, staring at the body. The diction of his friends tells us they have been through something like this before but have internalized it and moved on. Tim seems paralyzed by his guilt.
