The Tempest

How is the device of epilogue used in the tempest?

How is epilogue used in the play--what's its purpose? What can this be a metaphor of?

Usually an epilogue is used to tie up loose ends of the story. The audience, however, doesn't find out what happens to Caliban or what might happen to Antonio and Sebastian. Instead the epilogue is used primarily for Prospero's farewell to magic which, interpreted by many critics, is really Shakespeare's farewell to the theatre.
