The Swallows of Kabul

the swallows of kabul

Khadra depicts the city of Kabul in exquisite detail. How does the language the author uses turn the city into a presence as vital and as memorable as the people who inhabit it? In what ways does the physical environment mirror the inner lives of the characters?

Language is always the key in exquisite description; rich detail which depicts what one is trying to describe brings every reader into the center of the description. Her language is such that she "shows" rather than tells; her language is so vivid (lively) that if we were able to paint what she writes, we would be able to recreate the beauty which will later be contrasted to the horrible actions of the people in the novel.
