Mike is a wealthy wanderer. The end of the war left him with no purpose..... he just glides along through life with no job and a large amount of alcohol. Thus, the one thing that would make him husband material in Brett's eyes would be his allowance (family money).

Yes, Mike is bankrupt. As noted above, he receives an allowance from his family.... the money is there, he simply doesn't control it.
