The bulls are wild; they symbolize power, passion and freedom. The metaphor of the sex act underlies the battle between man and beast. The fight involves manipulation, dominance, seduction and finally penetration. Hemmingway uses the fight to highlight, what he feels , is the primal and instinctual side of the sex act. The male characters, who tend to view sex in a primal way,are all quite taken with the fight.
